Organized by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission from July 2nd to 4th, this year’s UPTET holds significant importance, especially for a large number of experienced teachers.
Why is UPTET 2026 Crucial for Serving Teachers?
A landmark Supreme Court decision on September 1, 2025, made it mandatory for all primary teachers, including those already employed, to qualify the TET. This ruling aims to ensure a standardized level of teaching competence across the state. Consequently, approximately 1.85 lakh teachers who are already serving in basic schools must now pass the UPTET to retain their jobs. This decision, though met with protests and calls for amendments, stands firm, making the examination a do-or-die situation for many.
New Rules and Support for Serving Teachers
Recognizing the unique circumstances of these experienced educators, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced two significant policy changes:
- Mandatory TET for All: For the first time, serving teachers are required to take and pass the TET.
- Leave for Examination: Teachers appearing for the UPTET will be granted official leave from their schools.
- Twice-Yearly Opportunity: The UPTET will now be conducted twice a year, offering more chances for teachers to qualify.
- Two-Year Deadline: Teachers have a two-year window to pass the examination. Failure to do so within this period will result in the termination of their employment, regardless of their age or years of service.

UPTET 2026: Participation and Logistics
The UPTET 2026 is witnessing a massive turnout, with a total of 19.94 lakh candidates participating. This includes:
- 1.85 lakh (1,85,791) currently serving teachers striving to secure their positions.
- 18.08 lakh (18,08,870) new candidates aspiring to enter the teaching profession.
The examination is being held across 955 centers in 60 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi hosts the highest number of centers (68), accommodating 1.27 lakh candidates, followed by Prayagraj (53 centers, 76,634 candidates) and Lucknow (45 centers, 76,720 candidates).
Strict Security and Transparency Measures
To ensure a fair and transparent examination, the UPTET 2026 features multi-layered security protocols:
- Observers: Retired IAS and IPS officers, along with commission members, have been deployed as observers in every district.
- Biometric & Iris Scans: Advanced biometric and iris scanning systems are implemented at test centers.
- CCTV Surveillance: Live CCTV feeds from all centers are monitored by a central command and control center.
- STF Deployment: Special Task Force (STF) personnel are stationed to prevent cheating and curb organized malpractices.
A Return After a Long Hiatus
This year’s UPTET marks its return after a significant gap of four and a half years. The last examination was conducted in 2022, following the cancellation of the 2021 exam due to a paper leak incident. The long wait underscores the anticipation and pressure associated with the 2026 edition.
While the examination is a critical step towards enhancing educational standards, challenges remain. Reports of heavy traffic jams in cities like Pratapgarh during the exam highlight logistical issues, causing inconvenience to candidates and their guardians. The high stakes have also reportedly led to considerable stress among long-serving teachers, prompting concerns from teacher associations.
